Glossary

EDI projects require a wide variety of specialized knowledge. In our glossary, we provide answers to most of the terms you may encounter in your EDI project.

GTIN

The GTIN (Global Trade Identification Number), which is a globally valid standard, allows products and services to be clearly identified. In 2009, it replaced the EAN (European Article Number) used until then. The GTIN contains important information (designation, weight and product group of the product) and is usually encoded in the barcode on the product or is directly below it. Every product in EDI traffic must have such a number; with it, invoices, orders, order confirmations or shipping notifications can be clearly identified. Like the GLN, the GTIN is assigned by GS1. GTINs are mainly used in the retail trade, but are also a basis for communication in e-business.
